This is how the side
garden began, not even an afterthought. I was taking a photo of the
porch in November 2003 when we were looking at the house. If you
concentrate on looking through the window you can see brambles, sticks,
and a small willow tree. The first summer, 2004, I waited to see what
the garden held, never figuring just how little there was of interest between the
houses. The previous owner grew too old to keep up with it all. When I
finally noticed that area it was high summer and goldenrod was asserting
it's domination. The only thing I did on that whole side of
the house that summer was carve out a little area for some Siberian iris
that I got from a neighbor in trade for some tiger lilies.
